Stories, I believe are the foundation of civilization and what we do. Before the written word, parables and fables were how we passed on knowledge and wisdom and philosophical musings. Stories were and are how we connect to our ancestors, to each other. Stories pervade all aspects of life. And storytelling is a skill that is needed in all disciplines. The most lyrical music tells a story of emotions, the most moving artwork captures the story of a moment, the most captivating movies involve highly skilled storytelling by the words in the screenplay, the vision of the director, the expressions of the actor. Politicians tell people the story they want to hear. Business people tell you the story they want to sell. And even as a scientist, the best research often tells a compelling story.
